+ • Support For Segger Jlink Edu Mini

The J-Link line of JTAG programmers from Segger is well known for their top of the line debuggers. The J-Link EDU Mini is a great option for those getting started with JTAG/SWD programming and debugging. Each J-Link EDU Mini is a version of the J-Link EDU Base in a reduced form factor with identical functionality for Cortex-M based targets. I have bought a JLink EDU mini and have tried to make it work with the ESP32 Wroom module for the last few days to no avail. When trying to connect to the chip via openocd, I get the following error: Open On-Chip Debugger v0.10.0-esp3 (2019-04-14-16:36).

  • Hi,

It does look like some sort of a low-level communication issue between OpenOCD and the JTAG probe. If others have reproduced the same problem outside VisualGDB, it may indicate that the Espressif’s OpenOCD port is simply not compatible with this version of J-Link.

Our best advice would be to try one of the debug probes that is fully supported (e.g. Olimex ARM-USB-OCD-H or any other one based on the FT2232 chip). Also if Espressif fixes the issue in the future in their github repository, please feel to let us know and we will be happy to release an updated binary package with the fix.

Low-cost J-Link for educational purpose J-LINK EDU is identical to J-Link BASE and offers the same functionality. It has been designed to allow students and educational facilities as well as hobbyists access to top of the line debug probe technology.

Full J-Link Support

Unlimited Breakpoints

The J-Link EDU license includes the unlimited breakpoints in flash memory feature. With the Flash Breakpoints, developers may set an unlimited number of breakpoints in flash memory helping to debug applications that run from flash memory.

Free Software Updates

As a legitimate owner of a SEGGER J-Link, you can always download the latest software free of charge. Though not planned and not likely, we reserve the right to change this policy. Note that older models may not be supported by newer versions of the software. Typically, we support older models with new software at least 3 years after end of life.

Supports concurrent access to CPU by multiple applications

J-Link allows multiple applications to access a CPU at the same time. This has numerous applications. J-Link commander can be used in parallel to a debugger, a tool to communicate via DCC can be used in parallel to a debugger or a visualization tool such as Micrium's u/C-Probe or SEGGER's kernel viewer embOSView. This feature is currently not available for Cortex A and R cores.

Crossplatform support

runs on Windows, Linux, macOS. The MAC and Linux versions are fully usable, but limited to the following components:

J-Link Commander, command line GDBServer, shared library (DLL-equivalent)

Licensing and Support
